Treatment Applications in medicine Lymphatic Filariasis A rare disease, most common in the tropics, due to inflammation, edema, or obstruction of the scrotal lymphatics, triggered by non-filarial infections PROS About Press Copyright Contact us Creators Advertise Developers Terms Privacy Policy & Safety How YouTube works Test new features Press Copyright Contact us Creators Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa is a rare disorder characterized by dermal fibrosis, hyperkeratotic, verrucous, and papillomatous le- sions that result from both chronic filarial and nonfilarial lymphedema. Various treatment options have been reported for this disease. Abstract. Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa, a rare manifestation of Kaposi’s sarcoma, is a progressive cutaneous hypertrophy caused by chronic non-filarial lymphedema secondary to obstruction of the lymphatic system that can lead to severe disfigurement of parts of the body that have gravity-dependent blood flow, due to edema, fibrosis, and hyperkeratosis, especially lower extremities. Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa is a progressively debilitating and disfiguring disease commonly presenting with verrucous, cobblestone-like papules, nodules, or plaques with nonpitting edema in the lower extremities.

Author information: (1)Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, Massachusetts 01199, USA. gina.luciano@bhs Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa (ENV) is a somewhat rare complication of nonfilarial chronic lymphedema that arises from a variety of obstructive diseases of the lymphatic system. The blocked lymphatic channels lead to protein-rich fluid in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues and brawny edema. Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa is a rare cause of chronic lymphedema, arising in the setting of chronic nonfilarial lymphedema caused by bacterial or noninfectious obstruction of the lymphatics. The resulting chronic lymphoedema manifests in the skin with discoloration, verrucous deformity, hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, papillomatosis, and eventually elephantiasis, which is known as elephantiasis nostras verrucosa. The figure ⇑ shows the extensive gross dermatological change that can be associated with chronic hypothyroidism.
