The Black Art Library is a collection of books on Black visual art (children’s books, exhibition catalogs, biographies, etc.) that I began earlier this year. It is intended to be an educational resource to share within the Black community and beyond. Emerging Conversations is an annual art education symposium organized by graduate students in the Art & Visual Culture Education program at the University of Asmaa Walton created the Black Art Library in 2020 to fill the gaps she witnessed in many mainstream art history curricula and museum collections.. She began researching and collecting books by and about Black visual artists, including painters and photographers, and then posting the collection on Instagram.

Walton, who recently completed her master’s degree in art politics from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, is from Detroit. As a child, though her mother worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts and she was encouraged in the performing arts by her parents, Asmaa Walton “did not have a lot of interest in it at the time.” Asmaa Walton, founder of the Black Art Library, a community resource dedicated to preserving the history of Black visual aesthetics, speaks about her work with the Detroit community.
